Peripheral Art
I haven't managed to figure out exactly why and how this came to be, but nevertheless, former Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell has done a series of interviews with the one Shepard Fairey...it's always interesting to see when someone famous interviews someone else famous I think. There seem to be a million episodes, ok fine maybe a handful, so I'ma post the first few here and you can find the rest on your lonesome. The first one features Farrell quizzing Fairey on the early "Andre has a Posse" days and how he got started doing street art - it's already had over 70,000 views! The second features Fairey talking about Farrell's "other favorite" artist, Banksy....the third is about vinyl toys...if you look at the intro graphics they've included some of Chase's work too.

Your friends can get with our friends and we can be friends
Seriously though, if you're in LA on Friday come party with DG and the FOREIGN FAM crews.
illafifth
I already went off about how excited I am that the new Roots LP is droppin. I dunno why...it's not like I think this is going to be the illest album of all time or anything...I think maybe I'm just sick of all the BAPE wearin fake thugs with legendary snow moving capabilities and absolutely no rhyme skills or musical credibility (hey CLIPSE, don't worry I'm not talking about you, you guys are still my favorite Snow Men). Oh and maybe that the Roots really deserve more love just for bein so damn highly skilled for well over a decade now... Ok so who else is psyched about this comin out?
they MIKE be GIANTs
New heat coming from the REBEL8 crew (available on DG very soon)...that's right it's a sick new deck featuring Mike Giant's incredible sharpie styles. If you were up on the deck he did for Krooked a year or so back you know this guy's decks are highly soughtafter and worth grabbing while the grabbing is even a possibility. I saw he had a stack of those Krooked joints in his studio in NM in march but I was too shook to ask him if they were for sale. I'm a loser, I know. These 7-ply skateboard decks are manufactured and screenprinted in the United States. 100% USA Maple wood. Before the white ink is layed on, both top and bottom, the complete 32" x 7.75" deck is dipped in black so no wood is exposed, even on the sides. Limited to 300 pcs worldwide, each is signed and numbered by the big friendly Giant himself . REBEL8 logo on the flip side.
What the Uff did you say?!?
So, colorninja has been down with this French rapper named Uffie...she's semi gully on that bougie French tip...i'm not sure if that makes sense...but so Uffie along with J Davey, performed at Cinespace last night which is colorninjas local weekly mash spot...i'ts kind of where he drowns himself in Vodka. But thats besides the point. I'm not sure how many people are down with Uffie but she killed it...had the girlies on stage...had Steve Aoki doing stage dives....what the hell was going on? So here's how the night went from my perspective.
So what the hell happens...we get to the spot and Cody (GRNAppleTree) gets his damn pinky cut cus of disrespect. Go figure.
J Davey killin' it before Uffie came out to demolish it.
Some more J Davey mashin'.
Chody (grnappletree) and the homie Alex...they know what the deal is with French rap masters.
The man behind the emcee...DJ Feadz.
Uffie gettin her crowd survey on.
Some UffForce 1's iD. It's dope to see a girl keep her game tight.
Uff gettin down with some crown ownage.
French girls with the dookie chains on lock. "It's fuckin' Uffie of course."
Cinespace got owned. Thanks for the energy Uffie. Had me poppin' glocks after the show. Aye! Aye! Aye!
If you still have no idea what the hell i'm talkin' about peep Uffies Myspace game. I'm ready to Uff!
p.s. i have video but my gay ass youtube isn't letting me upload...i'll add 'em later...

The War Machine hearts The Media (yay!)
You know something has gone horribly wrong in this so-called "Democracy" when the company which feeds you news and information is the same company that works for defense contracts from the war machine! That just doesn't make sense, or even seem legal to me, but it's sad and unfortunately true according to recent reports. The company I'm referring to is NBC...one of the US's biggest and oldest nationwide media corporations having been first formed in 1926. This all recently came to light because an internal NBC memo reveals that Phil Donahue, who happened to have the highest rated show on the network, was fired for making anti-war comments, execs initially claimed he was fired for poor ratings! So they took a loss because they didn't want their most popular host making anti-war, anti-republican comments. Furthermore, NBC has been accused of accepting defense contracts! Well they say, in journalism you're only as good as your reputation, so I think it's pretty safe to say that NBC "America's Latenight Leader" have just been revealed as another FOX-quality fear-inducing propaganda machine with no integrity whatsoever. Oh well...too bad for us I suppose. For now I'm gonna stick with The Onion. Maybe tNBC can change their logo to someone pulling wool over our eyes...I know that'd be a hard logo to pull off but hey it's appropriate right? There are a million articles online about this but you can start here or here.

Betta Axe Somebody!
If there's one thing DG has in common with the great Hannibal Smith, aside from being the star of an 80s action show, it's that we all love it when a good plan comes together. We love it even more when a good collabo comes together though...especially if it's between two of our homies and the end result is something we can sell! I kid. In all seriousness though, I was hyped on this coz I didn't know that the homie Andrew at 3sixteen even knew the homie Osa at Complete Technique. So there I am with my not knowing, and lo and behold, Andrew drops the P-Bomb on me (P for Pickaxe that is!) and shows me that him and Osa have been secretly building a pendant of doom, and Osa has been documenting the progression of this superbly handcrafted work of art on his blog. You can click the pic to link thru to the specific page with the pendant prototype almost in finished stages...look here to see the early daze. This lovely joint is slated for November release as part of the 3sixteen fall collection. Should be retailing for about $200 on DG...and to make things even sweeter are going to be doing a very special giveaway centered around this piece too.

Be Like Mike
Just found this dope video on Fecal Face about Mike Giant, who is one helluva talented cat. If you hadn't heard, dude just so happens to be the artistic force behind one of DG's most popular brands: REBEL8. On top of that he's collaborated numerous times with another DG heavyhitter: Fifty24SF, not to mention Upper Playground. He's a professional artist and tattoist who has come up in the skateboarding and graffiti cultures. Dude is sick...his outlook and persona are just awesome. I think he must have been a Buddhist monk in another lifetime...but enough jibber jabber! The video takes you from how he earned the GIANT moniker, how he landed his first job doing decks for THINK skateboards, and much more.
Time's 50 Coolest websites
Now first of all, sometimes when I've browsed all the cool art/fashion/sneaker blog/forum/things and really exhausted the online window shopping thing, sometimes, just sometimes, I feel like reading something of actual substance (as opposed to say, FOX news) and so in those times of need I head over to BBC's website because I imagine that they write everything with an English accent and that just makes me happy. So anyway today I head over there for a bit of the old slightly less fear-driven news/propaganda and what do I find? They've got a post on TIME's 50 Coolest websites. Since hearing "cool" and "website" in the same sentence usually makes my skin crawl, I haven't yet decided whether to be furious or completely relieved about the fact that they glaringly obviously skipped over Digital Gravel. I guess our TIME will come...Click the picture to find out which websites these people who clearly haven't heard of DG yet think are cool...
It's a wonderful world
Now if you've spent much time playing any of the Grand Theft Auto games then this should really look kinda familiar to you.
It's pretty dope to us...I'm impressed someone who works at Coke's ad agency was able to convince them to run with this concept but I'm glad they did. Luckily it's on Google video - seeing as how Youtube has momentarily gone down...the tubes...which hurts because our blog is like 80% youtube vids right about now. That's what happens when you put all your videos in one basket or whatever.

Pass the Popcorn
Oh snap! The (Square) Roots will back in full effect once again later this month with their new album Game Theory dropping Aug 29. That's right, they can get free promotion from me all day every day as far as I'm concerned...these are some teasers...too short and very teasy but that's all we got for now. The video for "Don't Feel Right," which is an ill song btw, looks set to kickstart the next revolution...something which is long overdue!! OOooooweeeee I can't wait...Show some love and actually cop the album instead of burning your homey's copy...you know these guys have earned it.
Lonely lonely lonely Monday morning...
Yeah it's Monday and I was hoping to find a video for that song on Youtube...the Snow joint from way back feel me? But anyway I couldn't find it...sorry Kim...so this will have to do instead. Seriously though, some brand needs to make that shirt he's wearing...bring it back for me...and don't front like you didn't love this in Junior High or whatever. I'm definitely expecting a snappy comment from Wally Servinsackz

Wally's Friday Vid
UNKL's "Rabbit In Your Headlights" directed by Jonathon Glazer and probably one of his best. If you've never seen this video, keep watching until the end as it is rather climactic. Enjoy... W

The candle.
While in Hawaii, I was sent on a quest to get a candle for Nima... its one of the two things he remembers seeing on a childhood trip to Hawaii (that and watching "Gremlins"). Mind you I've never seen one of these candles before - all I was told was that they are dipped in multiple colors and that they come in funny shapes. Off I went...
First stop was Big Kahuna's market.... this looked both promising and authentic:
did i say authentic? i meant very authentic.
in order to blend in better with the locals, i decided to grab some free cotton candy....
sadly there were no candles to be found here. i hit up keith (in4mation) to see where i would be able to find some, and he suggested the international market - fairly touristy as well but he figured we might have more luck there. he and i took a walk over...
after wandering around for a bit, look what we found.
Uh, so this is what Nima meant by "funny shapes." I thought he was looking for something more geoduck-like.
Of course, the dude selling them was playing us for fools. We asked if he was the only guy selling these joints and he said "yeah." Whatever. We took a walk to find some better priced options.
Sexytime.
After rounding a corner, look what we found... (that liar)
I put the order in and came back to pick up the custom piece the next day. Here it is, complete with the DG website color scheme and all:
Jyeah.

Tower Records Banned Radio Spots
We know people that have people on the pay roll that gots people that get things that they're not supposed to. They leaked us these Tower Records Radio spots that got yanked from play. Shits are funny as fuck. Broke White Castle Back. Peep them here
Soundbwoy killers
Deadly Dragon Sound know Jamaican music like Ronald McDonald knows burgers...which is to say they know it better than most. They are NYC's premiere downtown location for everything reggae; whether you're looking for mix CDs, vinyl (they got that rare 7" you need), books, and even related clothing such as t-shirts, including Selector! and much more. They have been behind some great reggae parties in downtown Manhattan, and they even set up events with well-respected reggae artists, a recent memorable one being for Carlton Livingston of "Trodding Through The Jungle" fame...You definitely wanna peep the spot if you're in the area: 102-B Forsyth Street New York, NY 10002. The DDS massive have very generously hit us off with their Year Of The Gun 2CD mix (to include alongside Selector tees while stocks last) which is dedicated to all gunman chune fans...on it you'll find the likes of Barrington Levy's "Murderer," Bounty Killer's "Copper Shot," and Cobra's "Gundelero" alongside many many more classic badman anthems. It's over 2hr hours of fiyah! Nuff informer fi dead! This is the flipside to reggae's rootsy "Peace & Love" stylee...and it's only appropriate when you consider how rough life in Jamaica can be, with one of the highest murder rates on earth (per head of capita). So with that said, take a peep at this excellently produced short film about the Deadly Dragon Sound fam and what they do:

Live at the BBQ
So...on Saturday I went to the SITUATIONORMAL Block Party event outside their downtown LA boutique, mostly because The Hundreds said, "Just go," in reference to it on their blog, even though they didn't follow their own advice - they went on a trip to the Bay area instead. The flyer promised food, drinks, and live performances. I rolled with Chadypooh and Karen (Foreign Famalam) and Andrew and Johan (3sixteen crew) and we arrived at the spot to discover a completely closed off block with a half pipe and some tents and a stage with a DJ spinning. First we went to check out Blends which is a dope new sneaker boutique more or less across the street from Situationormal on 4th. Blends is nice...sick sneaker selection and great staff. The real surprise though, was discovering 06+ which is sort of secretly hidden inside Blends. You enter the corridor and the serious looking rusted metal door automatically slides open and reveals a tiled wonderland of high-end casual clothing of the Junya Watanabe for Comme des Garcons variety. The clothes are incredible - but it's worth going just to see the incredible interior design of the store. They personally put up 6000 small white tiles and then proceeded to smash, damage, and smear them so that the place gives you the vibe that it's been there for a hundred years:
I strongly recommend you go check it out if you're in the area. After that we had to wait a while because Andrew and the homie Mike from Obey couldn't stop talking...
Then Mike's bro, hit us off with his awesome awesome new stickers...peep game:
At this point we were good and ready for some of the promised food and drink, but it turned out that you had to be on the guest list and we weren't. D'oh. Thanks Hundreds! I think we coulda finagled something but we decided to play it classy and go down the street to satisfy our appetites instead. They did announce that Wu-Tang was gonna perform at 4pm so that kinda livened us up a little bit so we could man up and dry our eyes. So we went to Petes cafe where you don't have to be on a list to get in. Believe it or not this is Chad's food BEFORE it went in his stomach:
When we finished and walked out of Pete's we almost bumped right into Redman, which is pretty much the best way to finish any meal as far as I'm concerned. Redman proceeded over to the legendary tent of fun and drinks that we couldn't enter, but before he disappeared into the fun world that was closed off to us, he took someone's skateboard and made a strong case for his new nickname that I've given him, Skateboard R:
At that point we were deep in the, "Ok so how long do we wait here for Wu to show?" game, which is actually an awesome game I've played many a time. Luckily some good peoples showed up including but not limited to Yas FX, Chulld Support (Freshjive), Farah (DG), Japors and his daughter, Danny (Freshjive), and the homie Brad from Estate too, I had to be back in Venice so I decided not to playing the wu-waiting game but it was nice to get out and see so many good heads in one spot and Chadypooh actually managed to not get a parking ticket for once which goes to show that miracles do happen.

Wally's Friday Vid
Classic track, classic vid, classic car, classic British cheating. Does that stereotype exist? If not, I'm starting it. The British are fucking cheaters.
Edit: I had no idea Blogzilla was going to post a Roots Manuva vid also. For rills, crazy coincidence. For the record, mine is better.

Stream some out for the homies
I know Friday is Wally's video day but I just couldn't help myself. Sometimes you gotta thank the homies for putting you on to some new fire...for opening up your ears to a new musical soundscape...so the first video I'm posting is for all the UK cats out there...UK doin it big right about now...so this one is dedicated to Raadrock aka Ink Vein aka Raaddigi - thanks for putting me on to the incredible Roots Manuva many years back...I pretty much love everything this dude drops so it was hard to choose but this one's a certified banger. If you're not familiar with dude you need to watch everything on youtube and get up to speed...
More UK heat...this time the song AND the video are dope...Plan B...dude is sick...thanks again to Raadrock:
And this one's for DJ Snafu of Nukfam - the DJ/producer for our super talented BK homies. Snafu used to be the DG photo dude and he definitely opened us up to a lot of ill sounds like this...the video isn't actually the official video for the song unfortunately but it was all I could find...
And this ones for all the DJs I used to run with way back in the mid 90s...can't remember who put me on to this...PWU, Haru, Dave, one of you guys. This video isn't amazing but the song just takes me way back on some spine tingling goodness:
Ok that's it...I'm not usually feeling this corny but whatevs yo you gotta give thanks for the good music... have a good weekend PEACE

Andre needs t-shirts!
Good morning world! I just found a link to this, over at Spine Mag...and it's a new Outkast video from Idlewild. All in all I like it on first view, even if it looks like they revisited the set for the Sorry Ms Jackson video. Other than that, Andre clearly is in need of some good t-shirts so if you see that dude tell him to holler at us...(Killer Mike and Big Boi: don't fret, you can get tees too. seriously, what else are we gonna do with these gold ducats we're swimming in?)
Can't front on the blues peoples...that's pretty much where it all started...oh and while we're on the topic of posting videos I couldn't not post this one: Trick Daddy's In The Wind...what a sick joint...if you slept on this one, it's not too late to wake up and smell the stickyickyicky...Trick Daddy is really real...if you ever caught this on MTV or BET they always played a video with Lil Kim which I thought sucked because the album version has Big Boi on it...the video was still dope coz they had the bodega with all the fake trick daddy products remember? If anyone can explain that to me please do because I wonder about this day and night all the time...anyway here's the video for the album version and on top of that it's the dirty version too so say "EARMUFFS" to all the little kids in hearing distance, nahmsayin...anyway enough jibberjabber....

Stop Looking At Porn.
The DG x 3s mousepad with the realest talk of all time has arrived. (The image is small so you probably cant see what it says at the bottom.... it says "For some real eye candy, check out digitalgravel.com and 3sixteen.com")
Ok, so maybe YOU dont look at porn all the time. But you probably have a "friend" that does - and dresses wack to boot. Pass it off to them. It might do them some good.
And the best part.... this sucker is FREE. Thats right. DG and 3sixteen have this huge pool of gold ducats that we swim in every day after work and the fact is that its getting out of control. So we dropped a few on these mousepads just for you guys. See how much we love yall...
I've got some pictures in Hawaii of the candle quest for Nima. Turns out that by "funny shapes" he really meant funny shapes and not the male apparatus. Imagine my embarassment when I tried to describe that to the candle folks and they gave me this really odd look.... and by odd I mean fiercely disgusted. I'll post pics tonight.

Aaron LaCrate is even more famous!
Yo so who thinks that Milkcrate's Aaron LaCrate and Mishka's own Greg R are in a competition to the death to see who can get the most press features!?!!? Anyway, if you recall we posted Aaron's interview on the Allhiphop site a month or so back, and the lastest installment of the ongoing pressathon is Aaron's recent feature on MTV...talking about all the B'more gutter music and club crack that he reps to the fullest. If you've been watching Milkcrate's designs over the last few years, or read any interviews with Aaron, then you won't be surprised that MTV looked to him when they went to cover Maryland's finest...
Oh yeah and while we're on the topic...don't forget to be on the lookout for the upcoming KOCH / Milkcrate Records world-wide release: "B-more Club Crack" out this Fall....
LaCrate's space
